Why so many Kerala families believe it
Marks are visible, ranked and official, so it feels natural to treat them as a talent map. What that skips is everything a mark sheet quietly folds together.
What's actually true
A mark measures a mixture of memory, teaching quality, tuition, exam technique and how a particular child performs under one particular kind of pressure. Aptitude — the capacity to learn to do something well — is a separate thing, measured by different tools with right and wrong answers, not by board exams built around procedure and practice.
This is why a child with strong board marks can struggle in a field those marks seemed to point to, and why a modest scorer can excel once the work suits them. Marks tell you how someone did on an exam. They do not, on their own, tell you what they are built to do.
What to do instead
