"Engineering guarantees a job." A generation ago in Kerala it nearly did. Today the phrase sells lakhs of self-financing seats a year on a promise the market no longer makes.
Why so many Kerala families believe it
The belief lags reality by twenty years. When engineers were scarce, the degree was the job. Now the number of B.Tech graduates far exceeds the number of genuine engineering roles, and the degree alone settles very little.
What's actually true
What gets hired today is demonstrated skill — code you have written, projects you have shipped, an internship you have done. Two students with the same degree and different portfolios have completely different outcomes, and the difference has almost nothing to do with the fee their families paid.
Computer science with real skills still places well. A generic branch from a weak college, with nothing built in four years, competes for a shrinking pool. Engineering can absolutely lead to a strong career — but as a field you work at, not a certificate that works for you.
What to do instead
If engineering is the real interest, commit to the craft, not just the seat: build projects, do internships, learn to actually make things. If it isn't, a large fee is an expensive way to find that out. Choose the branch and college for what you can do inside them, not for the word 'engineer.'

Frequently asked questions
Does an engineering degree guarantee a job in Kerala?
No. The degree certifies you passed; hiring is on demonstrated skill — projects, internships, coding. Computer science with real skills places well; a generic degree with nothing built behind it does not.
Is computer science still worth it in Kerala?
Yes, if you build genuine skills alongside it. CSE still places strongly for students with projects and internships. The degree opens the door; what you can actually build gets you through it.
