Is a Delhi University Degree Automatically Worth More Than a Good Kerala College Degree?

"A Delhi University degree is automatically worth more than a good Kerala college degree." The prestige of a national name makes families reach for it, sometimes over a genuinely strong option at home.

Why so many Kerala families believe it

The name carries real weight, and for some students and courses it's the right move. Treated as automatic, though, it hides a fair comparison.

What's actually true

Several of Kerala's own autonomous and aided colleges — St Teresa's Ernakulam, Loyola Thiruvananthapuram, Mar Ivanios, Sacred Heart Thevara, CMS Kottayam among them — offer strong faculty, established placement networks and a fraction of the cost, without asking a seventeen-year-old to also manage a new city, a new language and homesickness in the same year.

A central-university degree can be excellent, but 'worth more' depends on the specific course, the specific college, and the specific student — not on the city's name. For many students, a strong Kerala college delivers as much, closer to home, for far less.

What to do instead

Compare the actual programmes — faculty, placements, fit, total cost including living away — not the reputation of the city. If a national university genuinely opens something a strong Kerala college can't, go. If it's mostly the name, a good local college may be the smarter choice. Decide on the specifics.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Delhi University degree better than a Kerala college one?

Not automatically. Strong Kerala colleges offer good faculty, placements and far lower cost, without the strain of relocating at 17. 'Worth more' depends on the specific course, college and student — not the city's name.

When is going to a central university worth it?

When the specific course, faculty or opportunity genuinely exceeds what a strong Kerala college offers — enough to justify the higher cost and the challenge of a new city and language. Compare programmes, not reputations.
