Why so many Kerala families believe it
MBBS is a genuinely excellent qualification, which is why the belief feels safe. What it ignores is that the same degree is sold at wildly different prices, and the arithmetic changes completely across them.
What's actually true
An MBBS seat comes at roughly four tiers: a government college at around ₹23,000–25,000 a year; a self-financing merit seat at roughly ₹1–1.5 lakh a year; a management-quota seat at around ₹7–8 lakh a year; and an NRI-quota seat at ₹20–24 lakh a year (indicative recent-cycle figures, to verify against the current prospectus). At the top two tiers, the total cost stops making sense against what a junior doctor in India actually earns for years after qualifying.
The degree is the same; the debt is not. 'Worth any price' quietly assumes the salary will repay any loan, and for the highest tiers, on realistic Indian junior-doctor pay, it often won't for a very long time.
What to do instead
Chase the seat hard at the government and self-financing-merit tiers, where the arithmetic works. Before committing to a management or NRI-quota seat, run the actual numbers — total cost against realistic early-career earnings — and weigh a strong alternative career against a decade of debt. 'Any price' is a feeling, not a plan.
