Why so many Kerala families believe it
It spreads because coaching is visible and collective — you can see the whole class going — and because the marketing shows you last year's toppers, not last year's average.
What's actually true
Coaching does real work for some students on some exams. Preparing for NEET from a state-syllabus school genuinely needs structured, NCERT-aligned study most schools don't provide, and a good class supplies it. The catch is measurement: nobody publishes how much of a coached student's result the coaching actually produced, because the strongest students self-select into the best-known centres.
So the honest claim — 'a good class can add structure' — is much smaller than the sold claim — 'this is why our toppers topped.' Coaching can help. It is not a switch that guarantees a rank, and joining out of fear rather than fit rarely pays.
What to do instead
Judge a class on the concrete work it will do with your child — the teaching, the practice, the feedback — not on its banner of toppers. If disciplined NCERT-based study at home or a smaller setup covers the gap, that can be enough. Choose coaching as a tool, not as insurance against being left out.
