Architect (B.Arch)

Five years and up to ₹12 lakh, against a first salary in the ₹3–6 lakh band

Designing buildings and spaces, balancing structure, function and aesthetics.

How to become a Architect (B.Arch) in Kerala

Sit NATA, conducted by the Council of Architecture, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at Plus Two. Kerala allots the seats through KEAM’s architecture counselling, combining the NATA score with board marks; JEE Main Paper 2 is the parallel route into NIT-linked institutes. Council of Architecture registration after graduation is what legally makes you an architect, not the degree certificate.

How long it takes

5 years, plus mandatory Council of Architecture registration before independent practice.

What it costs

Roughly ₹3–12 lakh across the whole course, government colleges at the lower end and private colleges considerably higher. Multiply the annual fee by five before you compare this with a four-year degree; the extra year is a real cost in fees and in a year of earnings foregone.

Where the jobs are

Architectural firms across Kerala and India; Gulf construction-sector demand for design and project roles.

What it pays

Around ₹3–6 lakh a year starting in India, which is modest against a five-year investment and should be said out loud at the point of admission rather than discovered at graduation. It rises well with experience or an independent practice.

Who thrives in it

People who can hold both creative and highly technical, regulation-bound thinking at once.

Who struggles in it

Anyone expecting an immediate high salary to match the length of training.

How far it can go

An independent practice or senior design role raises the ceiling considerably; salaried junior positions plateau earlier.

Will AI affect this career?

3/5 — AI-assisted drafting and rendering tools are reshaping junior-architect workload, though design judgement and client management remain human.
