Commercial Pilot

The largest single course fee in this book, with no placement attached to it

Flying commercial aircraft as a first officer, working toward captaincy over a career.

How to become a Commercial Pilot in Kerala

A Commercial Pilot Licence from a DGCA-approved flying school after Plus Two with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, commonly trained abroad for cost and weather reasons and then converted for use in India. Verify the school’s DGCA approval on the regulator’s own list, and get an honest medical assessment before any money moves, because the medical standard disqualifies candidates the written stage never touches.

How long it takes

18 months to 2 years or more of flight training.

What it costs

Commonly ₹35–80 lakh or more for a full licence with the required flying hours. This is the largest single-course figure on these sixty cards, larger than an NRI-quota MBBS seat’s first three years, and it should be tested against Chapter 36’s rule before anything is borrowed: no more than about twenty times the realistic first monthly salary.

Where the jobs are

Indian and international commercial airlines.

What it pays

First-officer roles at major Indian airlines commonly start around ₹8–15 lakh a year or more, rising sharply with seniority and aircraft type.

Who thrives in it

Financially prepared families backing a genuinely committed, disciplined candidate — and families who have written down what happens if the licence is earned during a hiring freeze.

Who struggles in it

Anyone underestimating the real risk. Placement after licensing is not guaranteed, airline hiring runs in cycles tied to fleet expansion, and a weak cycle at the moment of qualification can mean years of no income with the full cost already spent.

How far it can go

Captaincy and, eventually, senior airline management roles; a high ceiling, reached only after the entry risk is cleared.

Will AI affect this career?

2/5 — cockpit automation is increasing over the long term, but human pilots remain mandated for the foreseeable future.
