The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) schools offer free, high-quality residential education, which is why the Navodaya entrance exam (JNVST) is so competitive. If your child is in Class 5 (for Class 6 admission) or Class 8 (for Class 9 admission), here is what you need to know.
Exam pattern at a glance
The Class 6 JNVST is a single paper of about two hours with three sections, designed to test ability rather than memorised syllabus:
- Mental Ability Test — the largest section, based on figures and patterns
- Arithmetic — basic maths and problem solving
- Language — reading comprehension passages
There is no negative marking, and the medium is available in Malayalam and other regional languages, so language is rarely a barrier for Kerala students.
How to prepare — a simple plan
- Start early: mental-ability questions need practice, not cramming
- Solve previous years' papers and timed mock tests every week
- Strengthen mental maths and reading speed daily, even 30 minutes helps
- Focus on accuracy first, then speed
- Build exam temperament with full-length practice tests
The biggest differentiator is consistent, guided practice — especially for the mental-ability section, which most school syllabi don't cover.
How Veda Topper helps
At Veda Topper International, Irinjalakuda, our Navodaya batch covers the full JNVST pattern with structured material, weekly mock tests and individual mentoring — for students across Irinjalakuda, Kodakara, Chalakudy, Mala and nearby towns. Many of our students have earned JNV seats.
Who can apply — eligibility
JNVST admits students into Class 6 (the main entry) and a smaller lateral intake into Class 9. For Class 6, the child must be studying in Class 5 in a government or government-recognised school in the same district where they seek admission, and fall within the official age window (generally 9 to 13 years on the cut-off date). At least 75% of seats in each district are reserved for students from rural areas, with further reservation for SC, ST, OBC, girls and Divyang candidates.
- Class 6 entry: child currently in Class 5 in the same district
- Class 9 lateral entry: child currently in Class 8
- Age must match the official window in the year’s notification
- Rural, SC/ST/OBC, girl-child and Divyang reservations apply
Application & selection — how it works
Applications are made free of cost on the official portal (navodaya.gov.in / the CBSE-linked admission system) when the notification is released — usually several months before the test. The JNVST is held in phases across the country; Kerala students typically sit the spring phase. After the written result, shortlisted candidates go through document verification and a medical check before the seat is confirmed. There is no application fee, and the medium of the question paper is available in Malayalam.
Frequently asked questions
Is education at a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya really free?
Yes. JNV schooling, including boarding and lodging, is free. A small Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi contribution applies only from Class 9 onwards for certain categories.
In which language can my child write the JNVST?
The paper is offered in Malayalam and several other regional languages, as well as English and Hindi, so language is rarely a barrier for Kerala students.
What is the exam pattern and is there negative marking?
The Class 6 test is a single ~2-hour paper of about 80–100 questions across Mental Ability, Arithmetic and Language. There is no negative marking.
When should we start preparing?
Ideally 6–12 months before the test, with steady practice of the Mental Ability section, which most school syllabi do not cover.
Can private-school students apply?
The child must be studying in a recognised school in the district for the qualifying class. Always confirm the exact conditions in the current year’s notification.
