Agents feel authoritative because they speak fluently about a bewildering process. What they mostly offer is not secret knowledge.
What's actually true
Almost everything an overseas education agent tells you is published, free, on government and university websites. What the agent supplies is convenience, paperwork and pressure — and, crucially, they are usually paid by the institution, not by you. That's a built-in conflict of interest: their incentive is to place you somewhere that pays them, not necessarily somewhere that serves you.
The industry is unregulated in India. It contains genuinely competent consultants and it contains people whose entire business is commission. The label 'agent' guarantees neither expertise nor honesty — only that someone, somewhere, is paying for the outcome.
What to do instead
Use an agent, if at all, for convenience — never as your only source of truth. Verify every important claim (fees, work rights, recognition) directly on the official government or university site, and remember who pays the agent. The information is free and public; the pressure is the paid part. Keep the decision yours.
