A foreign degree is a different product with different risks — and the two variables that decide whether it was worth the money are both controlled by governments that have been changing their minds roughly twice a year. Before you count the tuition, understand what you are actually buying: a study visa and a limited window of work rights afterward, whose value the destination country can and does revise.
The two numbers that decide everything
Ignore the glossy fee brochure for a moment. The two variables that determine whether an overseas degree pays off are post-study work rights and licensing recognition — and the recent direction on both has been consistently one way: tighter. Cost the degree against these, not against the ranking.
- United Kingdom — the post-study Graduate Route, once two years, was being cut to eighteen months, reported to take effect around January 2027.
- Canada — study-permit issuance was cut to roughly 437,000 in 2025, a 10% reduction; Post-Graduation Work Permit eligibility was overhauled around field of study, with many diploma and certificate programmes losing eligibility. Financial proof rose to around CAD $22,895.
- Australia — the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) remains a draw for nursing, IT and engineering graduates, but financial-capacity and genuine-student requirements have tightened and visa fees have risen sharply.
- United States — the H-1B lottery selected only around 21.8–22.7% of eligible registrations in the 2025–26 cycle, and moved toward a wage-level-weighted system that disadvantages entry-level candidates.
Every one of these figures moves. Treat the numbers above as the direction of travel, and verify the current year's rules directly from the destination government before committing a rupee.
The route that still works best
Nursing remains the strongest, best-documented migration pipeline by a wide margin — a licensed profession with a clear Dataflow-and-licensing route and steady demand across the UK, Ireland, Australia and the Gulf. Ireland in particular is a strong nursing-migration destination. Allied-health roles — medical lab technicians, radiographers — follow a similar route in a somewhat less crowded field. Accountants with a CA, CMA or ACCA see steady Gulf demand at relatively light licensing cost. If migration is the real goal, a licence-backed profession beats a generic master's.
How to cost it honestly
- Add the full annual cost — tuition plus hostel or rent, insurance, travel and living — not the first-year fee receipt.
- Price the exit, not just the entry: what does a homesick first-year do if the fit is wrong? Transferring a degree across countries mid-course is hard and expensive.
- Weigh the degree against the work-rights window at graduation, which may have shrunk by the time you finish.
- For Kerala-specific migration data, go to the source: the Kerala Migration Survey, the Kerala Economic Review and the national PLFS — not a Western marketing brochure.

Study abroad cost — frequently asked questions
What actually decides whether studying abroad is worth it?
Two things, and neither is the ranking: post-study work rights and whether your qualification is recognised for a licence in the destination country. Both have been tightening across the UK, Canada, Australia and the US — cost your degree against these, not the brochure fee.
Which overseas route is most reliable for a Kerala student?
Nursing, by a wide margin — a licensed profession with a documented migration and licensing route and steady demand in the UK, Ireland, Australia and the Gulf. Allied-health and CA/ACCA-backed accounting are next. A generic master's carries more risk than a licence-backed profession.
How should we budget for studying abroad?
Use the full annual cost — tuition plus rent, insurance, travel and living — not the first-year fee. Also price the exit: transferring a degree across countries mid-course is hard and costly, so plan for the case where the fit is wrong.
