Kerala PSC Degree Level Prelims 2026: Pattern, Syllabus and Strategy

What the Degree Level Preliminary examination actually tests, how it differs from LDC, and how to prepare for it if you are a graduate aiming at Secretariat Assistant, Company Board or Assistant Grade posts.

What Degree Level Prelims actually is

Kerala PSC replaced dozens of separate graduate-level notifications with a single Preliminary examination. You write one prelims paper, and your score is used to shortlist you for the Main examinations of whichever graduate-level posts you applied for — Secretariat Assistant, Company Board Assistant, Assistant Grade II, and others in that family.

This changes the strategy completely. Prelims is a filter, not a final. Your job is not to score brilliantly; your job is to clear the cut-off comfortably and get into the Main examination pool. Candidates routinely over-prepare for Prelims and then walk into the Main examination cold.

What is on the paper

The Degree Level syllabus is wider than LDC but not deeper. It leans on Salient Features of the Indian Constitution, Indian and Kerala history with real emphasis on the national movement and the Kerala Renaissance, geography, economics and current affairs, general science, simple arithmetic and mental ability, and a language component.

The single most reliable scoring area is the Constitution. It is finite, it is precisely defined, and the same articles — fundamental rights, directive principles, the amendment procedure, the emergency provisions, the schedules — come back year after year. A graduate who genuinely knows the Constitution has a large, permanent advantage over one who has skimmed it.

Where Degree Level candidates lose marks

They treat it like a college exam. Depth is punished here. Nobody is asking you to analyse the Constitution; they are asking which article deals with which subject. Breadth and instant recall beat depth every time in a 45-second-per-question paper.

They skip arithmetic because they are graduates. The maths is school level, which is precisely why it is dangerous — you have not done it in six years, and under a clock, rusty is the same as unable.

They read instead of solving. Prelims is a speed test disguised as a knowledge test. Sitting one full-length paper against the clock will teach you more about your gaps than a week of reading.

A working strategy

Split your time roughly 40 percent on Constitution, polity and history; 25 percent on geography, economics and science; 20 percent on arithmetic and mental ability; and 15 percent on language and current affairs. Sit a full mock test every weekend from day one — not from month two, from day one. Keep a wrong-answer notebook and revise only that in the final fortnight.

Practise this properly. Take a full-length mock test in the real exam pattern — 75 minutes, negative marking, worked solution for every question. Start a free mock test →  ยท  Get the question banks on Kindle →

Frequently asked questions

Is Kerala PSC Degree Level Prelims the same for all posts?

Yes. It is a common preliminary examination, and your score is used to shortlist you for the Main examinations of the graduate-level posts you have applied for, such as Secretariat Assistant and Company Board Assistant.

How is Degree Level different from LDC?

The syllabus is broader and leans much more heavily on the Constitution, polity, economics and the national movement. The pattern is the same: 100 questions, 75 minutes, one-third negative marking.

What should I study first for Degree Level Prelims?

The Constitution. It is finite, precisely defined, heavily weighted, and it repeats year after year. It is the highest return on study time in the entire syllabus.

Do I need to clear Prelims with a high score?

No. Prelims is a filter, not a final. Clear the cut-off comfortably and put your remaining energy into the Main examination, which is where most candidates are underprepared.
