A degree in hand and no circular telling you what's next. There are really seven roads from here — and the most expensive mistake is drifting between them for years while 'preparing'. This is the honest map from Veda Topper's After Graduation guide.

- Government service & the PSC years — a rational strategy, but only with the arithmetic said out loud and an exit date set. Open-ended preparation is the trap.
- Private employment in India — Kerala's own tech base, the AI hiring squeeze to factor in now, and why a few years outside Kerala is often the correct move.
- Higher study in India — CAT/MBA, GATE (arguably the best-value PG exam for Kerala engineers), NET-JRF and the academic path.
- Higher study abroad — real odds and honest arithmetic, not brochure promises.
- Working abroad — the safe migration channel, which occupations actually travel, and the recruitment-fraud red flags every family needs.
- Professional qualifications — CA, CS, CMA, ACCA, CFA and technical certifications, with the honest odds.
- Building something — what Kerala's startup support actually provides, and the real base rate of success.
The PSC years, honestly
Preparing for Kerala PSC is a legitimate strategy — but the families who succeed treat it like a job with a deadline, not an open-ended wait. Know the rank-list arithmetic, set a time limit, keep an income or a Plan B running alongside, and remember: an exit is not a defeat.
We coach exactly this — see our Kerala PSC preparation guide and government jobs after degree.
The employability gap — why a degree isn't a job
A large share of Indian graduates are certified but not employable. The gap is specific and closeable: communication, a portfolio that proves you can do the work, and the handful of skills that genuinely pay. Close the largest gap first.
- A CV bullet that shows a result, not a duty.
- A portfolio built with no employment history — projects, not promises.
- A public record (LinkedIn, GitHub) that a recruiter can actually find.
- Interview reasoning that beats recitation.
The AI question, answered without hype
Some of the entry-level squeeze is real and observable; much of the rest is unproven. Reason about your exposure structurally — which tasks in your target job are routine and automatable — and build the durable, harder-to-automate skills. Then stop doom-scrolling and start building.
The drift — and how to get out of it
Two years on and nothing has happened is not rare, and that matters. The way out is small and external, not large and internal: turn intentions into if-then plans, and take almost any paid job over another month of open-ended preparation. Structure is the treatment you can start today.
