Is Studying Abroad Really Cheaper Than People Say?

"Studying abroad is cheaper than people say, and much cheaper than a private seat here." It is one of the most effective lines agents use, precisely because it contains a grain of truth.

Why so many Kerala families believe it

For specific countries and courses, the headline tuition can genuinely undercut a private medical or engineering seat in India. The line works by quoting that headline and leaving out everything around it.

What's actually true

The honest cost is not the tuition receipt. It is tuition plus rent, insurance, travel and living for the full duration — often several times the first-year figure — set against a currency that works against you and a job market you cannot assume. And the payoff depends on work rights that may shrink before you graduate.

There is also the exit cost nobody quotes: what a homesick first-year does if the fit is wrong. Transferring a degree across countries mid-course is hard and expensive in a way transferring within Kerala is not.

What to do instead

Before comparing abroad with a private seat, build the full multi-year budget — living costs included — and weigh it against the work-rights window at graduation. Sometimes abroad still wins; often the honest total is far higher than the pitch. Get the real number before you commit a rupee.

Frequently asked questions

Is studying abroad cheaper than a private seat in Kerala?

Sometimes the tuition is — but the honest cost includes rent, living, insurance and travel for the whole course, often several times the first-year figure. Compare full multi-year totals, not headline tuition.

What hidden costs come with studying abroad?

Living costs, currency movement, insurance, travel, and the exit cost if the fit is wrong — transferring a degree across countries mid-course is expensive. Post-study work rights can also shrink before you finish.
