Why so many Kerala families believe it
It assumes passion is a thing you locate before you start — a hidden treasure to be discovered. That's not how strong interest in work usually arrives.
What's actually true
For most people, deep interest in work follows competence rather than preceding it — you grow to love what you become good at. Waiting for certainty about what you love before acting is the single most reliable way to stall. Two separate bodies of career research agree: passion for work is usually a side effect of skill, and much of what shapes a career comes from acting and stumbling into unplanned opportunities, not from introspection.
So the sequence in the advice is backwards. Action produces interest; endless searching for pre-existing passion produces paralysis.
What to do instead
Don't wait to feel passionate before you start. Pick a promising, workable direction, build real skill in it, and let genuine interest develop through competence and exposure. Try things, take opportunities, adjust. Passion is more often the reward for starting than the prerequisite — so start.
