Auditing, taxation, financial advisory and corporate accounting under India’s most demanding professional qualification.
How to become a Chartered Accountant (CA) in Kerala
Register directly with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India after Plus Two, in any stream, and sit CA Foundation. There is no entrance examination, no rank list, no counselling and no seat shortage — the filter is the examination itself, at every stage. Foundation, then Intermediate in two groups, then two to three years of Articleship inside a practising firm, then Final. Graduates can skip Foundation through the Direct Entry Scheme at 55 per cent for commerce and 60 per cent otherwise.
How long it takes
A realistic 4.5–5 years or more from Plus Two to qualification, often longer given re-attempts.
What it costs
Roughly ₹1.5–4 lakh across the full course, excluding coaching. That low fee is exactly why families underestimate this route: what it costs is not money but years, and a parallel B.Com is the standard protection against ending those years with nothing to show.
Where the jobs are
Corporate finance, audit firms and independent practice across Kerala and India, plus a well-worn Gulf finance and audit emigration route.
What it pays
A newly qualified CA in India commonly starts around ₹6–12 lakh a year or more depending on firm size, with Gulf finance roles paying considerably more.
Who thrives in it
Disciplined, patient people who can sustain years of self-directed study, to a schedule nobody enforces, alongside working articleship hours.
Who struggles in it
Anyone budgeting for a single attempt. Foundation pass rates in recent cycles have run roughly 15–19 per cent, so a family should decide in advance how many attempts it will fund.
How far it can go
Partner in a firm, chief financial officer, or independent practice — a genuinely high ceiling once qualified.
Will AI affect this career?
2/5 — routine bookkeeping and basic audit testing are increasingly automated, but statutory judgement and advisory work remain human-anchored.
