Why so many Kerala families believe it

The prestige is real and old, and agents have every incentive to reinforce it. What the assumption skips is that a foreign degree is a different product with different risks — not simply a better version of the same thing.

What's actually true

Two variables decide whether an overseas degree pays off, and neither is prestige: post-study work rights and licensing recognition in the destination country. Both have been tightening across the UK, Canada and Australia, often twice a year. A degree from an unremarkable foreign university, in a field with poor work rights, can be worth less than a strong Indian one at a fraction of the cost.

A foreign degree buys a study visa and a limited window afterward, whose value the destination government controls and keeps revising. That is very different from an automatic upgrade.

What to do instead

Cost a foreign degree against those two variables — work rights and licensing — not against its prestige, and compare it honestly with a strong Indian option. Sometimes abroad is the right call; often a good Indian degree plus the saved lakhs is the better one. Decide on the numbers, not the label.
