Quantitative Aptitude Shortcuts for SSC & Bank

Speed tricks that save precious seconds in the exam — free, printable.

Speed is everything in SSC and Bank quant. These shortcuts cut calculation time on the most-asked topics. From Veda Topper International, Irinjalakuda.

Percentages & fractions

  • Learn fraction–percent equivalents: 1/2=50%, 1/3≈33.3%, 1/4=25%, 1/8=12.5%, 1/6≈16.6%, 1/7≈14.28%.
  • x% of y = y% of x (e.g., 8% of 50 = 50% of 8 = 4).
  • Successive change a% then b%: net = a + b + (ab/100).
  • Price up x% then down x%: net change = −x²/100 (always a loss).

Ratio, average & ages

  • If a:b and b:c are known, make b common to get a:b:c.
  • Average of consecutive numbers = (first + last)/2.
  • When a new value joins and the average changes, use total = average × count.
  • Ages "n years ago/hence" — set present age as a variable and form one equation.

Time–work & pipes

  • If A does a job in x days, A's one-day work = 1/x. Add rates for combined work.
  • A in x days, B in y days → together = xy/(x+y) days.
  • Work–time–efficiency are inversely related; use the LCM method for total units of work.
  • Pipes: inlet positive, outlet negative — same as time-work.

Speed–distance–time

  • Speed = distance / time. Convert km/h → m/s by × 5/18; m/s → km/h by × 18/5.
  • Average speed (equal distances) = 2xy/(x+y).
  • Trains crossing a pole: length/speed; crossing a platform: (length+platform)/speed.
  • Relative speed: same direction → subtract; opposite → add.

Profit, loss & interest

  • Profit% = (SP−CP)/CP × 100. SP = CP × (100±profit%)/100.
  • Two items sold at same price, one at +x% and one at −x%: overall loss = x²/100.
  • Simple Interest = P·R·T/100.
  • Compound Interest (annual) = P(1 + R/100)ᵀ − P. For 2 years, CI − SI = P(R/100)².
